Batik Printing (Hand printing in clothes)

In batik printing, the craftsman is free to give shape to his ideas in designs with continuity. On the surface of the fabrics are drawn designs with a brush dipped in wax and paraffin to block the parts which are not to be dyed or meant to be in a light shade. Then it is given a cold dye bath which colours the background. Then the other parts are dyed step by step and part by part, shutting off the areas not to be covered. Finally the entire fabric is cleared of wax with boied water and soap, the wax coating breaking up into a kind of irregular network of thin hair like cracks through which the dye finds its ways and creates an infinite variety of designs giving to the cloth almost the appearance of stained glass.
